Full Journey Mapping & Flow Modelling

Lausanne Metro

Context Ahead of the planned one-year interruption of the m2 between Lausanne-Gare and Ouchy, TL needed to understand how all travelers were using the line. The objective was to capture real journeys and model flows to help plan alternatives to minimise disruption during the construction work. Approach • 2,200 face to face interviews with travelers boarding and exiting the metro on the stations affected by the future interruption • Optimised interviewer routing system ensuring balanced sampling across hours, days, and stations • Development of a custom mobile app to capture origins/destinations with live map recognition, and record only valid multimodal options • Setup and execution designed with M+ Analysis & Extrapolation • Reconstructed full door-to-door journeys to build detailed mobility chains for modelling. • Extrapolated the interviews into real passenger volumes, creating a flow model of expected daily traffic. • Analysed home and work catchment areas to anticipate the zones most exposed during the interruption • Quantified travellers likely to need alternative mobility solutions Aftermath The methodology proved instrumental in developing effective alternatives for inhabitants and was also applied across several bus lines to identify complete origin-to-destination flows
