Transports publics lausannois (TL)
When TL faced a year-long closure of the M2 metro line between Lausanne-Gare and Ouchy, the challenge was clear:
Understand where passengers were really coming from and going, so replacement services could keep the city moving throughout the disruption.
We captured travel patterns directly from passengers across the network:
2,000+ face-to-face interviews at stations affected by the closure
Optimized interviewer routing plan ensuring balanced sampling across hours, days, and stations
Development of a mobile app enabling interviewers to record full origin-destination journeys with live map recognition and realistic multimodal options
Reconstructed full door-to-door journeys across the city and beyond
Extrapolated to real passenger volumes to map daily traffic patterns
Identified the most-affected areas and exactly how many travelers needed alternatives

TL used our work to design replacement services based on how people actually travel.
The methodology has since been applied to other lines across the network, providing a replicable approach for planning any future service changes or disruptions.
