TL M2
Transports publics lausannois (TL) faced a year-long closure of the M2 metro line between Lausanne-Gare and Ouchy. To design effective alternatives, TL needed to understand complete journeys: Where were passengers coming from? Where were they headed? How could replacement services keep the city moving during a year of disruption?
We captured real travel patterns directly from passengers across the network:2,000+ face-to-face interviews at stations affected by the closure Optimized interviewer routing plan ensuring balanced sampling across hours, days, and stations Development of a mobile app enabling interviewers to record full origin-destination journeys with live map recognition and realistic multimodal options
We built a complete picture of how people move:
Journey reconstruction: Full door-to-door trips showing real mobility chains across the city and beyond
Flow modeling: extrapolated to actual passenger volumes, producing a comprehensive model of daily traffic patterns
Heat maps: Identification of most-affected catchment areas and precise quantification of travelers needing alternative solutions

TL used our work to design replacement services based on how people actually travel. The methodology has since been applied to other lines across the network, providing a replicable approach for planning any future service changes or disruptions.
